I crested the peak the other day and the car continues to run. This car has meant a lot to me as I’ve had it since senior year of high school and it was the car that I really cared about. That being said, I enjoy exaggerating my love for it even more for others’ entertainment so I went into the absurd for celebration.

I took a lovely picture in front of the Milwaukee Art Museum at exactly 200,000 miles. I had to drive about aimlessly downtown for about 8 miles to get it there. Sure, I could have just lied and said it was at 200,000 when it was really at 199,992, but I would have know.

Then this past weekend I celebrated with a fuel filter, oil, and spark plug change to reward the car for a job well done.

And finally, what better way to celebrate than cake and blowing out the candles?

Nice! I drove a 98 GLX 5-speed from 2001-2015, and now I’ve got the wife’s old car, a 2001.5 4mo wagon. It’s only got 118k on it and I doubt I’ll see 200k because it would take me another 15 years to get there...One day I’ll be able to look back and think how I spent 1/3 of my adult life in a B5.

There are multiple roadwarriors on Passatworld with 300k+ on their B5 and it sounds like you got a “good one” (ie, not one of the lemons that earned VW its reputation).

Also, if this wasn’t present, I would have asked about it:

There’s something about the B5 Passat that is very special even though it’s really just an average mid size car.

My theory lately has been that a VW will either be a piece of junk or last forever, there isn’t much in-between. I think under body rust will ultimately be what does mine in as the Wisconsin winters haven’t been kind to it. I'll keep running it until it dies though.

I like the cupcake idea!

Our B5.5 wagon just hit 140k miles, and even though she has personality quirks, mostly from flawed design (pcv system to name one), she has never let us down, whether around town or on a 8+ hour drive. She’s not bad on gas (27 mpgs on the highway), roomy (dog riding in the cargo area) and very comfortable even with 2 car seats. I always look for potential replacement options, but for some reason, this one ticks the right boxes

I can say this much: It did win virtually every comparison test from 98-01, and for good reason — reliability aside, it really was the best all-around midsize car.

When I compare the materials and build quality to our brand new Honda, it’s sad to see how much better things were 15 years ago. The paint, interior materials, ergonomics, thoughtfulness...it was on par with Mercedes and BMW (thanks heavily to its Audi underpinnings).

There’s something to be said for an underdog working harder than everyone else to be the best. The exact opposite of Honda’s laziness.

So far I’m on the last forever side for our B6 Passat. And it’s bigger inside, which is nice. It’s got one spot of surface rust I need to fix before it becomes something bigger I don’t want to fix. Something chipped the paint over the drivers front wheel opening and it started rusting there. Up to 115K on it and it’s still a fun car to drive.
